ST. LOUIS -- Senior quarterback Nolan Wood completed nine of 10 passes for 284 yards and four scores as Valle Catholic won its 12th state title by defeating Marceline 41-0 in the Class 1 State Championship Game Saturday in St. Louis.
The 12 state titles tied the Warriors with Webb City for the most of any Missouri school. Webb City beat Helias 28-14 in the Class 4 game on Friday to win their 12th.
It was Valle's third title in the last four years.
The win was also the 15th of the year for Valle setting another school record for most wins in a season. It was the Warriors fourth straight shutout and seventh of the 2013 season.
The game was a rematch of the 1989 championship game when Marceline
last made it to the state title game only to lose to Valle 49-7.
Marceline, the boyhood home of Walt Disney, may have been hoping for a fairy tale ending in 2013 but Valle ended their run. The Tigers started out 3-3 on the year but then ran off 8 wins in their quest for the class one crown. Marceline knocked off four state ranked teams to reach the championship. They upset Penny who beat Valle in the championship last year in the semi-final.
Valle led 35-0 at the half and after Tyler Fallert scored on a 4-yard run to make it 41-0 with 3:37 in the third, Valle coach Judd Naeger, in the interest of sportsmanship, pulled his starters.
It was Fallert's 35th TD of the 2013 season.
Wood not only threw for 4 scores he ran for another. The 5-yard TD run with 8:26 to play in the first gave Valle a 7-0 lead.
His favorite target was sophomore Conner Basler.
Basler hauled in 6 catches for 156 yards and three scores. Basler also had two interceptions in the game.
Valle coach Judd Naeger said he had planned for the Warriors to throw
more in the playoffs but the wind had not been in their favor.
Wood threw his first TD pass with 1:03 left in the first. The 13-yard TD pass to Basler gave the Warriors a 14-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Warriors drove 87 yards early in the second and took a 21-0 lead with 9:35 before the half. The big play was Wood's 63-yard TD pass to Justin Roth.
Roth had 123 combined yards on four carries and two receptions in his final game.
Valle fumbled a punt return later in the second but their defense came up big stopping the Tigers on a fourth and five at the Valle 11.
What followed the defensive stand was another show me bowl record.
Wood threw a 90-yard TD pass to Basler and the Warriors went up 28-0 with 4:24 before the half.
Wood's 37-yard TD pass to Basler with 1:15 left in the half gave the Warriors a 35-0 lead at the break.
The second half was played with a continuous clock, stopped only for TV time-outs.
The Valle defense was as remarkable at their offense as they allowed the Tigers only 120 yards the entire game. Marceline ran 48 plays.
Bryant Vessell had a team-high 8 tackles. Ethan Fallert and Jacob Trautman both recorded sacks. Logan Tucker added to his team leading number of tackles setting a new school record with 191 for the season.
The Valle defense held the Tigers leading rusher Blake Belzer to 40 yards on 21 carries.
Freshman Silas Bartotto recovered a Tiger fumble to preserve the shutout for Valle late in the fourth. The recovery stopped the Tigers final drive of 50 yards.
The Warriors only allowed their opponents 8.5 points per game for the 2013 campaign.
Valle's offense rolled up 501 yards on Marceline.
The Tigers concentrated on stopping the Warrior's leading rusher. Senior Tyler Fallert still ran for 75 hard yards on 13 carries.
The all-stater added 2,327 yards rushing in his senior season. As a junior he set a school record with 3,030 yards.
Naeger is now the second winningest coach in Valle football history as he concludes his 10th year. He has led the Warriors to the state playoffs in eight of the last nine years collecting three state championships.
As a player for Valle in 1995 he quarterbacked the Warriors to a state title.
Wood, Vessell, Basler and Jesse Meyer were named the 'Nationwide Is On Your Side' players of the game by the KBDZ sports crew.
