Valle Catholic defended its Class 2 state baseball title with a 7-1 victory over New Bloomfield in a rain delayed championship yesterday evening at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon.
Andrew Basler went the distance for the Warriors allowing only three hits.
Dan Bergtholdt's two-run homer in the first gave Valle a lead they never gave up in winning their third baseball championship.
The Warriors also won in 2009.
Valle scored four in the third and added another run in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
The Wildcats only run came in the fifth on an error.
Valle finished 30-5 under coach Nathan Gegg.
New Bloomfield (17-10) was going for its eighth state title. Their last was in 2011.
