It was the second state championship in
baseball for the school, and it came in a season that
saw the Warriors extend their school record for wins
For departing seniors Evan Lauer, Justin
Roth, Bryant Vessell and Nolan Wood, it was something of
a payback for their sophomore year. The Warriors
finished second in that season.
The state championship will apparently
be the last for head coach Judd Naeger. While his exit
from the baseball program has been whispered knowledge
in the Ste. Genevieve community, Naeger made it official
after the game. He leaves the program after guiding the
young men under his charge to two state championships in
four appearances, and nine district crowns in 13 years.
He will continue to lead a football program that has
been red hot, with three state titles in the past four
seasons. He told reporters at the ballpark that it all
"...came down to spending more time with my family."
Andrew Basler went the distance,
settling down after a shaky second inning. His complete
game followed a gem by junior Daniel Bergtholdt in
Monday's 4-0 semifinal win over Linn. Basler allowed
only five hits.
Bergtholdt, meanwhile, was a red-hot
hitter. He was 4 for 5 in the championship game after a
three hit performance in the semifinal.
Valle stranded 14 runners and
scored in every inning except the fourth.
The team placed third in 2007 in
Class 1, won the Class 2 title in 2009, and
finished second in Class 2 in 2012.
