Wilfred L. ‘Willie’ Abernathy

A funeral will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 for 81-year-old Wilfred L. "Willie" Abernathy of Perryville, who died Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Independence Care Center of Perry County in Perryville.

He was born November 9, 1935 in Perryville, the son of Arlous W. and Ruby E. (Farrar) Abernathy who both preceded him in death.

He married Barbara Hartle May 26, 1956. She survives in Perryville.

He is also survived by a daughter: Connie (Rob) Starr of Incline Village, Nevada: five sisters and four brothers: Dorothy (Willie) Wichern of Washington, Arkansas, Viola (Gary) Cooper of Calimesa, California, Janet (Elbert) Hadler and Carol (Melvin) Kluender both of Perryville, Kathaleen (Steve) Gundling of Friendswood, Texas, Ronald (Vallerie) Abernathy of Gordonville, Ivan (Cheryl) Abernathy of Brooksville, Florida, Gary (Sharon) Abernathy of St. Louis, Lynn (Sheilah) Abernathy of Moorpark, California; a sister-in-law: Norma Abernathy of Brooksville, Florida and many nieces and nephews.

Willie was preceded in death by a daughter: Susan; a brother: Lester; and a sister: Alice Roth and two nephews.

Willie was a member of the PHS graduating class of 1953 and a four-year member of FFA.

He worked in the trucking industry as an over the road truck driver, a safety inspector and in terminal management.

His career in the trucking industry spanned 62 years, 30 years of which were spent in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Region.

Willie was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Long Beach, Mississippi, and served on the board at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Perry County.

He was a member of SEMO Camping Club.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Young & Sons Funeral Home.

A funeral for 81-year-old Wilfred L. "Willie" Abernathy of Perryville will be held at noon Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Young & Sons Funeral Home. Pastor Jeremy Gundling will officiate.

Memorials preferred to Kindred Hospice or Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
