Alma Schumer Funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 13th, 2011 for 86-year-old Alma Schumer of Perryville, who died Thursday, June 9th, 2011 at Independence Care Center.
She was born May 12th. 1925 in St. Louis, the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Schumer) Unverferth. They preceded her in death. She married Norbert Schumer June 24th, 1944. He survives. Also surviving are nine children, Miriam (Ken) Layton of Perryville; Sr. Carol Schumer, D.C. of St. Louis; Sharon (Bob) Moonier; Gary (Norma Christisen) Schumer; Cathy (Lynn) Peirick; Bob (Jackie Buerck) Schumer; Kenny (Diane Layton) Schumer; Dave (Kathy Wibbenmeyer) Schumer all of Perryville and Tom (Debbie Newell) Schumer of Cape Girardeau; twenty-six grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren and expecting one. Other survivors include four brothers and four sisters: Joe Unverferth, Rosemary Healy, Edwin Unverferth, Joan Welker, Jack Unverferth, Regina Unverferth, Jim Unverferth and Mary Ann Becker. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Baer; two brothers, Thomas "Pete" Unverferth and "Sonny" Unverferth; one granddaughter and her husband, Amy (Schumer) and Jason Schamburg. She was a very loving wife and mother. The heart and center of her family, with unconditional love for everyone she met. She was the ultimate role model and remains so for her family and friends. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Ladies of Charity, Cursillo, Eucharistic Adoration, Ministry of Praise, Knights of Columbus Council 1263 Auxiliary, a volunteer, for many years, at St. Vincent Elementary School Library and a 1943 graduate of St. Vincent High School. Visitation for Mrs. Schumer will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, in Perryville, Sunday, June 12 from 4 to 9 PM with Parish Vigil Service at 7 PM. Visitation will continue on Monday, June 13 from 6:00 to 10:45 AM with Rosary at 9 AM. Her Funeral Mass is Monday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jason Schumer and Rev. Milton Ryan CM concelebrating. Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Vincent de Paul Schools, Vincentian Marian Youth, Cursillo, Birthright or Serenity Hospice.
