Bodenschatz assumes command of aviation battalion

By Ann Keyes ngmo.pao@US.ARMY.MIL

SPRINGFIELD -- In an emotional ceremony in Springfield, Lt. Col. Roger Bodenschatz assumed command of the 935th Aviation Support Battalion, relieving Lt. Col. David Dippold of the post he's held since December 2007.

"Traditionally, an outgoing commander takes this opportunity to thank the men and women of their command and recognize them for their efforts; in this case, so many are exemplary," said Dippold, of St. Louis, in his outgoing address to Missouri National Guard Soldiers, family members and special guests at the Guard armory in Springfield.

Dippold went on to recall speaking to his troops last month at annual weapons qualification:

"I'm not going to repeat myself about what I told them then, but I can tell you one thing, these three years in command of this unit has been the most professionally rewarding experience of my 25 years of service."

Dippold specifically thanked his wife of 30 years, Mary Dippold, 35th Aviation Brigade commander Col. John R. Anderson, and Brig. Gen. Larry D. Kay, assistant adjutant general of the Missouri Army National Guard, the latter two having previously commanded the 935th.

Kay said he was honored to be in the battalion's presence, and assured the new commander would be outstanding.

"It's been a distinct honor and privilege to be a part of the Missouri National Guard. And seeing this continuity of command happen, and knowing that the 935th, that I was the first commander of, is getting turned over to somebody that's better than me it means very much," Kay said.

Kay addressed the battalion and onlookers after participating in the traditional passing of the colors, from 935th Command Sgt. Maj. Javier Acosta to Dippold to Anderson to Bodenschatz, who returned the battalion's flag to Acosta.

Bodenschatz, of Jefferson City, spoke of the future of the battalion under his command.

"I can tell you I do not make change for the sake of change. If it works, I will leave it alone," Bodenschatz said.

Bodenschatz then gave thanks to Missouri Guard military leadership for the confidence they have in his abilities as a commander. He also gave high marks to his predecessor.

"He's done an excellent job," Bodenschatz said of Dippold. "I'm falling into a well-oiled machine."

Dippold will now serve as training officer for the 35th, a post formerly held by Bodenschatz. And while looking forward to new challenges, it was clear Dippold's stint as commander is not something he'll soon forget.

"It's good to have a fresh face, someone with new ideas," he said of the change of command. "But being this close to the Soldiers, frankly, it's the best job in the Army."

Bodenschatz is the son of June Bodenschatz of Perryville and the late Raymond Bodenschatz.

Brown, Fuhrmann deployed to Iraq

From a news release

OKINAWA, Japan – Two Perryville residents, Michele L. Brown and Terry E. Fuhrmann are currently deployed with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 (MWSS-172), Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan.

MWSS-172, which joined forces with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) in Al Asad, Iraq, is the first wing support squadron from III Marine Expeditionary Force to deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

All previous MWSS's deployed from aircraft wings based in the United States.

The Marines of MWSS-172 will perform aviation ground support aboard Al Asad Air Base and throughout the Anbar province and modify existing helicopter-landing zones (HLZ) while constructing new ones. Using heavy equipment, the Marines level the area and compact the soil, then lay down a coat of soil-stabilizing substance to prevent excessive sand clouds. The process will enhance the pilots' visibility, allowing them to land aircraft safely.

Additionally, MWSS-172 and Alpha Company, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion (CEB) teamed up with the Engineer Company, 7th Iraqi Infantry Division, to construct a new headquarters site for Iraqi Army soldiers to conduct operations from. For more than two years, 3rd Battalion, 10th Brigade, 7th Iraqi Infantry Division, has occupied the school in the town of Bagdadi while maintaining security in the local area.

The 3rd CEB fortified the new site, placing barriers, guard houses and concertina wire while MWSS-172 and the Iraqi Army engineers erected prefabricated buildings.

The school is scheduled to be de-militarized before the start of the next school term, allowing students to return and reducing overcrowding in the neighboring schools.

44TH Inf Div reunion planned

Dear Editor,

Nearly 60 years ago (November 1946), following the end of WWII, the 44th Infantry Division was reactivated as the Illinois National Guard (excluding Chicago). Company "D" of the 135th Combat Engineer Battalion, 44th Infantry Division was located in Chester from 1946 to 1954, and we are trying to locate members who served during that period.

The 44th was activated into Federal Service on February 15, 1952 because of the Korean War. It was stationed at Camp Cooke, California, and in November 1952, was moved to Fort Lewis, Washington. Numerous members of the 44th were deployed to Korea. However, the Division’s primary duty was training and by April 1953 had trained 15,000 troops. We need your help in locating those members who served in the 44th Infantry Division from 1946 through 1954 (when it was deactivated). As time goes by, we are losing members at an alarming rate. We would appreciate it if you would run an article on the 44thInfantry Division (Illinois National Guard) and our planned reunion, or at least publish a notice of our reunion, as outlined below.

The 44th Infantry Division (Illinois National Guard) Veteran’s Association is holding a reunion at the Holiday Inn, City Centre, in Peoria, IL, October 13 to 15, 2006. If you served in this unit from 1946 to 1954 please contact either:
