City administrator, police chief out in Ste. Genevieve City Administrator Richard "Dick" Herbel and Police Chief Dale Newman are no longer in their jobs. Former City Administrator Herbel was not available for comment Friday, though he did send an email announcing his leaving city hall to his email correspondents. Former Police Chief Dale Newman said he was cleaning out his office Friday and was somewhat glad that it finally happened after all the stress of wondering what was going to happen. Now he says he can get on with his life. Officially there is no comment from city hall: City Clerk Pam Meyer says she is taking any phone calls that come in for the city administrator. Mayor Dick Greminger said there would be no official statement from city hall until Monday. City Clerk Pam Meyer said the city would release the information after the 72 hours permitted under the state's sunshine law. Apparently the decision to remove the city administrator and police chief came during a closed meeting held following Thursday night's regular meeting of the board. There was no hint of the action to come during the meeting itself, though rumors of a possible change in the city hall leadership were rampant during the campaigns leading up to the April 8th election. In fact one alderman, Larry Marler in the fourth ward, was chided by a city resident at an open meeting for allegedly telling people doing business with the city not to worry about what City Administrator Herbel told them because he wasn't going to be city administrator much longer. Herbel, himself, told at least one person, that if the election went a certain way, his days of city administrator would be numbered. Rumors of firings following the election were denied by one of the aldermanic candidates. Reports of the shake up at city hall began making the rounds last night and by this morning Ste. Genevieve residents who were in Farmington said they heard the reports there. But officially we will have to wait until Monday for details on the shake up and the search for a new city administrator and police chief.
