Annual Popeye Picnic is in the books

The 26th annual Popeye Picnic came to an end Sunday evening with a huge fireworks display that lit up the nighttime sky over the ol’ salt’s historic hometown.

Unusually hot and humid weather for this time of year greeted those attending the three-day event. A spokesman with the Chester Police Department said this morning there were reports of minor incidents over the weekend.

Randolph County Herald Tribune composition manager Carrie Gonzalez was crowned the Survivor of Goon Island Friday night during ceremonies at the gazebo.

Dave Mueller of Chester was the grand prize winner of the cash drawing held Sunday night after the fireworks display.

The Hawks of St. Mary’s Catholic School was the winners of the Popeye’s Junior Fireman Muster held at the Cohen Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.

Buena Vista Bank took first place in the float competition in the annual parade held Saturday afternoon. Steeleville Baptist Church took second while St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ellis Grove was third.

The Search for Stars finals were held Sunday afternoon and evening at the VFW Hall. The winners were Julie Schmerbauch of Sparta in the 7-12 year old group, Jenny Lynn Schmerbauch of Sparta in the 13-17 year old and Michelle Morrison of DeSoto, IL won the adult age category.

As we get more results from the various contests, we will post them at our website at suntimesnews.com. Very soon, you will also be able to check out photos from the 26th annual Popeye Picnic as well.
