William O. Smith
Chester High School has announced the death of a long time educator and
W.O. Smith passed away on December 26 in Elmwood, IL. He was 89 years
William was a 1954 graduate of Southern Illinois University. He had
lived in Chester for 49 years where he taught and coached both grade
school and high school. He retired from teaching in 1975 and from the
coaching ranks in 1983. He had lived in Elmwood for the past four years.
Showing their appreciation to W.O. Smith, Chester High School named the
football field after him.
He was born on April 23, 1911 in Harrisburg, IL, the son of William and
Cora (Oliver) Smith. He married Ethna Barnard in Anna, IL on October 31,
1923 and she preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Bill, of Elmwood, IL. One daughter, Helen
Summenrs of Reno, NV. One brother, Eugene Smith of Prescott, AZ. Nine
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.
His parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held in Chester at a later date.
