Chester Police Officer assaulted Saturday afternoon

A Chester police officer is recuperating in a St. Louis hospital after an incident Saturday afternoon.

Chester policeman Seth Buch responded to a call just after 4pm on Spring Street on a report of a subject that was experiencing mental health issues.

Officer Buch was injured while attempting to arrest a 17 year old male juvenile. According to reports, the male juvenile was on top of Buch who suffered a serious head injury.

When word broke on the police scanner that a Chester officer was down, police from the Chester, Steeleville, Sparta and Red Bud police departments along with Illinois State Police, Randolph County Sheriff's Department and Chester Fire Department all responded to the scene behind Chester National Bank.

The 17 year old male juvenile was arrested for aggravated battery of a police officer and resisting arrest. Two others, 18 year old Kristy Johnson and a 16 year old male juvenile were also arrested and charged with obstructing justice.

Johnston was taken to the Randolph County Jail in Chester while the two juveniles were placed in juvenile detention. All three are from Chester.

Officer Buch was flown to St. Louis University Hospital. Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey said Buch had a severe concussion but was doing well.
