Gilster Mary Lee drug sweep results in two arrests

Perry County Sheriff’s Department

PERRYVILLE -- A drug sweep at the Gilster-Mary Lee plant in McBride has resulted in two arrests.

Perry County Sheriff Gary Schaaf says the department’s K-9 and deputies Friday searched the plant at the request of the management.

Two employees were found to be in possession of drugs and paraphernalia.

They are: 51-year-old Connie L. Hernandez of Sedgewickville and

25-year-old Reo R. Smith of Cape Girardeau.

They were each charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

"Using drugs while operating or working around machinery is clearly not safe" said Sheriff Schaaf," for them or the other employees working around them. This sort of thing cannot be tolerated."

The K-9 team makes several appearances at that facility every year, along with any other company that makes a request.

"It is a good way to help keep your employees safe, and send a message to other employees that this sort of thing is not acceptable in the work place," said Sheriff Schaaf.
