Jobless rate rises again

JEFFERSON CITY -- The jobless rate rose again in Perry and Ste. Genevieve Counties in October when compared with the same month one year ago.

Perry County unemployment jumped to 6.9 percent from 4.6 percent. The rate had been 7.2 percent in September of this year. The actual number of people looking for work rose from 483 a year ago to 722.

The Ste. Genevieve County jobless rate jumped to 9.4 percent from 6.1 percent. The rate had been 9.3 percent in September of this year. The number of people looking for work rose from 605 to 955.

The unemployment rates in surrounding counties:

Jefferson: 10.2, up from 6.8 a year ago

St. Francois: 10.7, up from 7.2 a year ago

Bollinger: 8.8, up from 5.7 a year ago

Cape Girardeau: 6.5, up from 4.7 a year ago

Statewide: 9.5, up from 6.1 a year ago.
