Fourth Friday Art Walk is in its second year! Mike Devaney
STE. GENEVIEVE -- On Friday, August 28, Ste Genevieve's Art Community Will Hold the Monthly Fourth Friday Art Walk with a "Block Party" sponsored by the Tour of Missouri Local Organizing Committee and the Ste Genevieve Municipal Band. On August 28, Ste Genevieve's art community will present the monthly Fourth Friday Art Walk with a "Block Party" sponsored by the Tour of Missouri Local Organizing Committee and the Ste Genevieve Municipal Band from 5 - 9 p.m., and continuing after dark with a special event. The Tour of Missouri is a seven-day, 612-mile cycling race which draws racers from around the globe, and will be in Ste Genevieve on September 8th. The Local Organizing Committee has been busy promoting this event with "fun rides' and other events, recently. The latest promotion, scheduled in conjunction with this month's Fourth Friday Art Walk, will include music sponsored by the Ste Genevieve Municipal Band, a kid's bike decorating contest, a "fun ride" for all ages, a prize drawing, food vendors, shops open late and a "special surprise" at dusk. Bring lawn chairs for the "special surprise". All the events, and the Art Walk, will occur in the Ste Genevieve's remarkable downtown historic district. Growing to a remarkable twelve venues, from the original seven studios and galleries over a year ago, the Art Walk in Ste Genevieve is becoming a regular date on the calendars of many locals and visitors. A short drive from Farmington, Chester, Perryville, Festus, Cape Girardeau, Washington, Augusta and St. Louis, visitors may easily plan a visit to historic Ste Genevieve on the spur of the moment. Ste Genevieve's historic buildings, quaint restaurants, eclectic shops and long-time art community are just some of the things visitors can enjoy on a leisurely afternoon stroll in the downtown district. Surviving centuries of the community's many battles with the mighty Mississippi River, the present-day Ste Genevieve offers many old-town views with very little evidence of those trying times. This is the charming and unusual setting of Ste Genevieve's Fourth Friday Art Walk. In its fourteenth installment, the Art Walk's newest additions are the Joseph Sisters' Gallery, the Petite Gallery and the Merchant Street Gallery. The Galleria Ste Genevieve will feature Ste Genevieve artist, Betty Joggerst. Joggerst is known for her wonderful watercolor paintings of flowers, still lifes and regional architecture. Galleria Ste Genevieve also offers a great selection of regional art and Misselhorn prints. At the Ste Genevieve Welcome Center (formerly the Interpretive Center) a visitor on the Art Walk can see paintings produced by 1930's Ste Genevieve Art Colony members and noted Sparta, Illinois artist, Roscoe Misselhorn. Public restrooms are available at this location. The Center for the Arts will host an exhibit by Daisaku Ikeda, this year’s recipient of the Visualizing Peace Award for outstanding contributions towards peace through art and an origami workshop by artist/dancer Mariko Schmit. Nationally known quilter, Raymond Houston, will be the featured artist at the Joseph Sister's Gallery. At the Studio de Michel, Rick Bayers is the featured artist for the second month and Justin Bilello will be throwing his pottery on a wheel outside. Featured youth artists at Sara's Antiques, will be students from various grades attending Valle Elementary School. The show will be open until 8:30 p.m., so arrive early. Stop in at Sara's Ice Cream Shop next door for a cone or a soda fountain treat. Mo's Art Gallery, located off the back garden of the Southern Hotel, features 3 dimensional works from the juried artists of the Best of Missouri Hands organization. Other studios and galleries on this month's Art Walk are Lulu's Studio, Studio 221 and Only Child Originals. Each Art Walk venue features new exhibits, displays, artworks or serve refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. Other shops and businesses may be open as well.
