May 6, 2008 Sparta receives USDA funding for new water treatment plant U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced Monday that the City of Sparta has received a $900,000 grant and a $2,100,000 loan through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Rural Development. The funds will be used to construct a new 1.8 million gallon per day water treatment plant. "Safe water supply is a basic necessity and this plant will not only meet current needs but provide for future growth," said Costello. "I will continue to work to ensure that investment in our communities remains a federal priority." The last major update for the current water treatment plant in Sparta was in the 1970s. The water treatment plant was built in 1916. |
